The Royal and Revolutionary War Patriot Ancestry of Frances Slocum and Many Persons of the Miami Nation of Indiana”

By Michael Vincent Schwing, 18 Aug 2013, with 2 corrections on the connections of some US Presidents, and an Addendum on the Relationship of President Zachary Taylor to Frances Slocum Maconaquah from 1 Feb 2014.

BACKGROUND:

I have been interested in Native Americans and their culture and languages since I was a child. Growing up in Indiana I was of course interested in those native peoples who lived (and still do live) here. I feel for those of the Miami Nation still in Indiana who have been forever turned down for tribal recognition, unlike their cousins in Oklahoma who still have Federal recognition. Mamaque pehkokia! [“Together, Peace!” the motto of the Miami Nation of Oklahoma]

Yesterday in copying some information from Gary Boyd Robert’s book, “The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants to the American Colonies or the United States” (with a 2008 Addendum, Coda, and Final Addition), 929.11 R644ro 2008, (book abbreviated here as “RD 600”), on page 881, I noticed some Slocums listed. I pulled the Slocum History of Charles Elihu Slocum, M.D., PhD, LL.D, [“History of the Slocums, Slocumbs and Slocombs of America, Genealogical and Biographical” 1908, 929.2 S634s1 1908, Defiance, Ohio: published by the author] from the shelf of the Indiana State Library, Genealogy Division, and found that it was the same family as Francis Slocum, the white woman taken by the Delawares from the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania. I have been familiar with her fascinating (to me) story for several years now. I was going to put the Miami chiefs and their families in my family file as a disjunct (not connected to anyone else already in the file) due to my interest in the tribe’s history and the chiefs’ importance to Indiana history.

I am pleased that with Frances Slocum’s royal European ancestry I do not have to put the family in as a disjunct, but as a part of my extended royal cousin “family”. By her royal European ancestry, Frances Slocum is my 17th cousin 5 times removed. The best part of it being the same family is that Patience Carr, a European royal descendant who married Joseph Slocum, is, from the Slocum genealogy book, the grandmother of Frances Slocum (Maconaquah, “Little Bear”). Joseph and Patience Carr Slocum are ancestors of Warren Gamaliel Harding. [CORRECTION: The following U.S. Presidents are descendants of the ancestors of Patience Carr Slocum, generation 7, below, William Almy and his wife Audrey Barlow Almy :] the 29th US President; Richard Milhous Nixon, the 37th US President; and James Earl Carter, Jr., the 39th US President. (See Gary Boyd Roberts, RD 600 (2008), pages 881-882). [CORRECTION: Generation 17 below, Maude de St. Philibert and her husband Sir Warin Trussell are ancestors by their son Lawrence Trussell] of First Lady Barbara Pierce Bush and her son George Walker Bush, 43rd U.S. President (Gary Boyd Roberts, RD 600 (2008), pages 457-458).

My hope is that this little monograph will please those who want to know all their history and not just certain pieces of it; that someone will find this useful and interesting. I have not seen this developed as a royal line by any of the well-known writers of European royal ancestry. I have seen on Ancestry.com a couple of competent genealogists placing their Miami family and tribal genealogy online. It is known that Chiefs Jean Baptiste Richardville (Peshewa), Francis LaFontaine (Topeyaw), and Francis Godfroy (Palawnzwa) are all part French, part Myaami. While some of the ancestry of each of these men has been traced, I have not seen for any of them their genealogy traced back to French or other nobility or royalty. If I find said ancestry, it will be added to this monograph.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR PATRIOT ANCESTRY

Frances Slocum’s father, Jonathan Slocum, performed public service for this country during the Revolutionary War. As a Quaker, he did not join the military, but he did support the cause in other ways. Descendants of his are therefore eligible to join the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) if female, and the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) if male. He is listed in the DAR Patriot Index, 2003, 3 volumes, Volume 3, page 2473:

“SLOCOMB: SLOCUM, SLOCUMB  Jonathan : b 5-1-1733 RI d 12-16-1778 CT m

(1)   Ruth Tripp PS CT”.

This means he was born 1 May 1733 in Rhode Island, died 16 December 1778 in Connecticut and married Ruth Tripp. Public Service in Connecticut.”

A Sons of the American Revolution application has been accepted by descent from Jonathan’s son Major Isaac Slocum for his descendant Marion Abel Slocum, born 27 Jan 1890, application approved 10 March 1960. Frances and her husband Shepoconah (called “Deaf Man” by the whites) were not hostile to the US government and did not take part in any fighting for one side or the other during the American Revolution so her descendants should be able to join the DAR and SAR. I could not find any applications through Frances however.

THE ANCESTRY

The Slocum Genealogy by Charles Elihu Slocum, Book 2, page 189 lists a synopsis of Frances Slocum’s Slocum ancestry (written in phonetic English, transcribed here into normal current English spelling):

“242. FRANCES SLOCUM, the near life-long Captive among North American savages was of good English blood in her lineage in New England being as follows, viz: Jonathan (gen 6) Slocum and wife Ruth Tripp; Hon. Joseph (5)  and Patience Carr; Giles (4) and Mary Paine; Samuel (3) [and unknown wife]; Giles (2) and [first] wife Joan; and Hon. Anthony Slocum, who was among the first purchasers in 1637 of the territory centering at Taunton, New Plymouth, now Massachusetts, and later a Lord Deputy Proprietor, etc., at Albemarle, in the early government of Carolina.”

I added the information in brackets and the numbers written here in parentheses were originally written as superscripts. Patience Carr and Joseph Slocum were second cousins as Patience’ mother Jo(h)anna Slocum Carr was daughter of Ebenezer Slocum and unknown wife, and Ebenezer was an older son of Giles and his first wife Joan, who are the parents of Samuel, grandfather of Joseph as above.

Patience Carr’s royal European ancestry is on page 881 of Gary Boyd Roberts’ (a 10th cousin once removed to me through our common ancestry in Jeremiah Clarke and his wife Frances Latham Clarke Dungan) book “The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants to the American Colonies or the United States” till Maud Trussell and husband John Hasting. Then to page 457, where the ancestry goes to King Henry II of England. The Mainwaring family ancestry to King Henry I of England (maternal grandfather of King Henry II of England) is on page 501. I will place the generations in reverse order for here we are tracing the ancestry back to the royals and not down from them to famous people as in Gary Boyd Roberts’ books. I am also reversing the numbering.

  1. Frances Slocum
  2. Jonathan Slocum = Ruth Tripp
  3. Patience Carr = Joseph Slocum [these are generation 21 from Henry II as generation 1]
  4. Caleb Carr, Jr. = Joanna Slocum
  5. Philippa Greene = Caleb Carr, Sr.
  6. Anne Almy = John Greene, Jr.
  7. Audrey Barlow of Rhode Island [the Immigrant Ancestor of this line] = William Almy
  8. Stafford Barlow = unknown
  9. Ellen Stafford = Thomas Barlow
  10. Sir Humphrey Stafford = Margaret Tame
  11. Sir Humphrey Stafford = Margaret Fogge
  12. Humphrey Stafford = Katherine Fray

(their daughter Anne married Richard Neville, 2nd Baron Latymer, ancestors of  President Zachary Taylor, see Addendum 1, below)

  1. Sir Humphrey Stafford = Eleanor Aylesbury
  2. Sir Humphrey Stafford = Elizabeth Burdet
  3. Maud Hastang = Ralph Stafford
  4. Maud Trussell = John Hastang    [Maud is sister of Lawrence,  gen 8, page 457 RD]
  5. Maude de Saint Philibert = Sir Warin Trussell
  6. Ada de Botetourte = Sir John de Saint Philibert
  7. Maud or Matilda FitzThomas = John de Botetourte, “1st Baron Botetourte, formerly thought to be an illegitimate son of Edward I, King of England, d. 1307, but see TAG 63 (1988):145-153” (page 457, RD 600 (2008), Gary Boyd Roberts)
  8. Beatrice de Beauchamp = Sir Thomas FitzOtho or FitzOtes
  9. Ida Longespee = William de Beauchamp
  10. William Longespee, Earl of Salisbury = Ela, Countess of Salisbury

William is the illegitimate son of King Henry II by Ida, perhaps a de Toeni, who       later became the wife of Roger Bigod, 2nd Earl of Norfolk.

  1. King Henry II of England died 1189 (= Eleanor of Aquitaine, not the mother of William).

I am extending this line a little more:

(sources: Weis; Plantagenet Ancestry of Seventeenth Century Colonists, etc)

  1. Matilda of England = 2nd husband, Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou
  2. Henry I of England = Matilda of Scotland (daughter of King Malcolm I of Scotland and Margaret of England, the daughter of Edward Atheling, son of King Edward II Ironside of England. Malcolm I is the son of King Duncan I of Scotland who was killed in a battle with the forces of Macbeth, who became King, not murdered personally in his own house as in Shakespeare)
  3. William I the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy who conquered England in 1066 = Matilda of Flanders, granddaughter through her mother Adela of King Robert II of France. She is also a descendant of Charlemagne, Western Roman Emperor and King of France, Germany, and Italy.

Another line of ancestry to Henry I, King of England:

17. Sir Warin Trussell,  above

18. Matilda de Mainwaring  = Sir William Trussell

19. Warin Mainwaring = Agnes Arderne

20. Sir Thomas de Mainwaring = unknown

21. Roger de Mainwaring = unknown [now on page 501, RD 600 (2008), Gary Boyd Roberts]

22. Amicia de Meschines = Ralph de Mainwaring

(Amicia is an illegitimate daughter of Hugh Kevelioc by an unknown woman)

  1. Hugh Kevelioc, 3rd Earl of Chester = Bertrade de Montfort
  1. Maud of Gloucester = Ranulph de Gernon, 2nd Earl of Chester
  1. Robert of Caen, 1st Earl of Gloucester = Mabel FitzHamon

(Robert is an illegitimate son of King Henry I of England by an unknown woman)

  1. King Henry I of England, died 1135 (= Matilda of Scotland, not the mother of Robert. But see above for actual descent from her)

These royal and noble descents also connect to many other persons as ancestors or distant cousins, some famous, some not. There are many sites online listing these people such as family sites on Ancestry.com (e.g. my family tree: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/45620697/family).

I also have a tree on Rootsweb.com which is free, however it only gets updated a couple times a month. Also distantly related are all the United States Presidents descended from Henry I of England including his descendants King Edward I and Edward III-father of John of Gaunt:

  1. George Washington; 3. Thomas Jefferson; 4. James Madison, Jr.; 6. John Quincy Adams; 12. Zachary Taylor; 32. Franklin Delano Roosevelt; 9. William Henry Harrison, and his grandson 23. Benjamin Harrison; 14 Franklin Pierce; 22. and 24. Grover Cleveland; 26. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr.; 27 William Howard Taft; 30. Calvin Coolidge; 31. Herbert Hoover; 38. Gerald Ford; 41. George H.W. Bush and his son 43. George Walker Bush; 44. Barack Obama II.

BIOGRAPHIES

There are many biographies of Frances Slocum, one of the best is written by the Slocum cousin mentioned above who wrote the Slocum genealogy. The Slocum genealogy mentioned above has much information and full texts of the letters exchanged which aided in finding Frances. There is also a biography in the American National Biography, volume 20, pages 103-104. Both of these list other good biographies.

ADDENDUM 1, 1 Feb 2015 (in addition to the two corrections above and a couple minor changes and typo corrections), The relationship of President Zachary Taylor and Frances Slocum Maconaquah.

Another “genealogical accident” makes Zachary Taylor, the 12th U.S. President and the one who signed the executive order allowing Frances Slocum Maconaquah to stay in Indiana after the forced removal of the Miami Nation from Indiana by giving a land grant to her two daughters, a royal-descended 10th cousin once removed (he is the removed generation) to Frances Slocum Maconaquah. The relationship is (page 229, RD 600):

Above, generation 12.   Humphrey Stafford = Katherine Fray

11. Anne Stafford = Richard Neville, 2nd Baron Latymer

10. Dorthy Neville = Sir John Dawney

9. Anne Dawney = Sir George Conyers

8. Sir John Conyers = Agnes Bowes

7. Eleanor Conyers = Lancelot Strother

6. William Strother = Elizabeth UNKNOWN

5. William Strother, allegedly the immigrant to Virginia = Dorothy UNKNOWN

4. William Strother, Jr.  = Margaret Thornton

3. Francis Strother = Susannah Dabney

2. William Strother = Sarah Bayly

1. Sarah Dabney Strother = Richard Taylor

0. Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), 12th U.S. President = Margaret Mackall Smith
